HOW A SMALL TOWN GIRL BECAME THE ‘QUEEN OF ALL MEDIA’

Oprah Winfrey is a media proprietor, highly acclaimed talk show host, philanthropist, entrepreneur, and actress. According to Forbes, the “Oprah Empire” is currently worth $2.5 billion. She is widely known for her talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which had been hailed as the highest rated television program in history. Known for her title as “Queen of All Media,” Oprah is recognized as the richest African-American in the history of the United States. She is also the first ever black multi-billionaire in North America and tagged as the most outstanding black philanthropist in the country.

Oprah was born on January 29, 1954 to Vernon Winfrey and Vernita Lee in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Interestingly, she was supposed to be named “Orpah” in reference to the Bible. However, confusion in spelling and pronunciation led to her being called “Oprah” instead. She then grew up in the care of her maternal grandmother following the separation of her own parents. Following a tumultuous childhood marked by sexual abuse, Oprah moved to Nashville and lived with her father who worked as a barber and a businessman.

In 1971, Oprah enrolled at Tennessee State University and worked for radio and television broadcasting companies in Nashville. Following her graduation, she worked as a local news presenter for WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Maryland. She was later on selected to host “Baltimore Is Talking” with Richard Sher. In 1984, she moved to Chicago, Illinois and became the anchor for a morning talk show called “A.M. Chicago.” Her presence in the show was eventually felt as she took a poor performing segment into one of the most widely anticipated shows in the state. By September 1985, “A.M. Chicago” was renamed as the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and received an hour-long air time.

On the same year, she was discovered by Quincy Jones and was sought to star in the film adaptation of Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple.” Following her role in the movie, which was directed by Steven Spielberg, Oprah became a household name. This prompted King World, a media distributor, to purchase the syndication rights for “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” This resulted in the show getting aired on 180 cities. The talk show would later on win various awards including several Emmys for Best Talk Show while Oprah herself was honored as the winner for Best Talk Show Host.

In 1986, Oprah created her own production company called Harpo, Inc. This company produced resources providing in-depth discussions of topics close to her heart such as a TV drama miniseries that was based on Gloria Naylor’s “The Women of Brewster Place” where Oprah starred alongside Cicely Tyson, Olivia Cole, Paula Kelly, Lynn Whitfield, and Robin Givens. In 1996, Oprah launched an on-air reading club and publicly announced that she aimed “to get the country reading.” The format was Oprah sharing a book she was currently reading with her fans and listeners. After a month, she and her followers would discuss the book on air.

The club eventually saw Oprah becoming the most influential book marketer across the U.S. since practically every novel she recommends becomes an instant bestseller. Records showed that her monthly recommendations boosted sales more than marketing efforts like radio shows, magazines, and feature articles. However, Oprah opted to no longer make the book club a monthly effort in 2002.

Oprah currently resides in Montecito, California in a place she calls “The Promised Land” and is described as a grand estate with a view of the mountains and the ocean. She lives with her long-time partner, Stedman Graham, a businessman, author, and educator.
