TIMELINE OF EVENTS

Stig was living in Sweden while Preston was based in Maryland, U.S. when they first met online. Back then, Stig was an economics professor and had his own investment firm. Preston, on the other hand, served in the U.S. Military before becoming an entrepreneur, investor, and author.  One day, while Stig was doing research on Warren Buffett, he stumbled upon Preston’s Warren Buffett course on YouTube, and eventually came across the latter’s website, BuffettsBooks.com

Buffettsbooks.com, is an educational website created by Preston that was inspired by Warren Buffett’s investing career. It also had an online forum where Stig and Preston began exchanging messages and soon discovered a mutual interest in the world of investing. Preston then initiated the idea of writing an accounting book together.

In 2014, Stig flew to the U.S. to attend the Annual Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders’ Meeting. The pair also used this chance to personally meet for the first time and finish the Warren Buffett Accounting Book, the book that they were co-writing,

They also met with fellow investors at the 2014 Berkshire Hathaway Meeting. At the end of their trip, while Preston was waiting to board his flight home, he had a chat with Hari Ramachandra. Hari suggested to Preston that he and Stig could start a podcast. Preston considered this and knowing Stig shared the same passion for Warren Buffett, proposed the idea of venturing into podcasting together.

In the same year, Preston and Stig launched the first episode of We Study Billionaires. They initially planned on only talking about Warren Buffett on the show, but they realized it was also worth discussing strategies and lessons from other successful investors, entrepreneurs, and self-made billionaires.

GROWTH OF THE PODCAST

A few months after going live, We Study Billionaires started gaining traction and was recognized by Business Insider as one of the most recommended finance podcast shows to listen to.

In 2019, The Investor’s Podcast expanded its range by inviting new hosts to lead and produce podcasts that tackle other aspects of investing. The Investor’s Podcast then transitioned to a podcast network.

The Investor’s Podcast Network grew in popularity over time and became one of the largest investing podcasts in the world with more than 100 million downloads reached in 2022.

The network has consistently been recognized by major publications such as Business Insider, and CNBC as one of the top podcasts in investing, business, and finance.

OTHER ENDEAVORS

The Investor’s Podcast Network network has also ventured into creating investing courses and financial tools. The courses include the Intrinsic Value Course, The Intelligent Investor, and How to Invest in ETFs. They have also recently launched the TIP Finance, a collection of tools that aims to aid investors to make better decisions in terms of managing their investment portfolios.

LESSONS FROM PRESTON AND STIG

The network’s success did not come easy. Stig and Preston learned a lot through several years in the podcasting business. Here are some of the lessons and anecdotes from Stig and Preston.

1. UPHOLD QUALITY.

When Preston and Stig recorded the first three episodes of We Study Billionaires, the quality was so bad that they decided to redo the first three episodes. This attention to detail has set the tone for the entire business moving forward. “One of the reasons our shows have been relatively successful is because we have a really high standard of how we want to do things,” Stig said.

2. BUILD YOUR COMMUNITY.

Until now, one of the major factors in the network’s success is its loyal community. “Our community empowers us to empower other people.” Stig explained. “It’s their support that keeps this going. Having a community and being an influencer doesn’t come from you; it comes from other people, and you are the end result of that.”

3. BE AUTHENTIC.

Preston and Stig were always honest about what they could and couldn’t do. They were learning together with the TIP Community, trying to learn how to invest and pick stocks from great guests and books. Even internally, TIP has been upfront with any mistakes made, and there is a drive to do better.

4. FIND PEOPLE WHO SHARE YOUR VISION.

TIP gew from just Stig, Preston, and a bunch of freelancers to a full-time team working on various aspects of the business such as coding, design, sales, sound editing, content creation, and more. “It made sense because we have a certain way of doing things, but we’d also like to be able to explore other things that we can do in this space. It was easier to do this with full-time employees,” Stig shared.

5. INNOVATE YOUR BUSINESS.

The biggest success in TIP’s story so far is probably the move to becoming a podcast network. “We wanted to create more shows that would talk about specific topics within the realm of investing,” Stig explains of this idea. “We acknowledged that we didn’t want to do it on We Study Billionaires, and there was a lot we didn’t know about other types of investing, like real estate or investing for a younger audience.” And so in 2019, a rebranding was undertaken. TIP is now known as The Investor’s Podcast Network, with several shows related to investing under its umbrella.
