A QUICK LOOK AT THE MOST FUTURISTIC CARS ON THE MARKET

By Larisa Wong

We are all aware that technology has advanced in leaps and bounds during recent years. One of the best illustrations of this observation can be seen in the progress associated with the automotive industry. Concepts that seemed fictional in the past are now very real and the future looks bright indeed. Space-age materials, smart driving systems and even self-driving cars are all here to stay. Let’s take a quick look at a handful of the most futuristic cars on the market in order to fully grasp just how far we have come.

THE BMW HOLOACTIVE TOUCH CONCEPT CAR

This car is all about augmenting the reality of the passengers themselves. One of the most interesting features of this vehicle involves the cameras found within its interior. They are able to sense and interpret finger movements. Therefore, drivers might no longer need to employ tactile touchscreens. It is also important to point out that this gesture recognition software has already been used in the S5 and S7 series. So, a truly “holographic” experience might be just around the corner.

THE RENAULT POM

This next vehicle can be thought of as a “do-it-yourself” car. While the systems and overall design have been based around the popular Twizy, Renault has taken things a step further. It can be argued that the POM is the first vehicle that allows the user to become an engineer in his or her own right. Its open-source nature allows other third parties to build upon its chassis and frame. Therefore, the only real limits involve the imagination of the designer. Unfortunately, this is not a family-sized vehicle. It is intended to seat only the driver.

THE TOYOTA CONCEPT-I

It should be no surprise that Toyota has made this list, as they have been pushing boundaries within the automotive industry for decades. The incredibly futuristic Concept-i is a pure illustration of this mindset. While the exterior may appear similar to the vehicles seen in the recent Blade Runner film, the true advancements are within the interior. Smart touch controls, voice command recognition and the inclusion of a steering wheel that appears similar to a game controller are sure to impress drivers. In the event that the user becomes tired of driving, an artificial intelligence system known as “Yui” can take over; not bad for those long and boring road trips.

THE HONDA NEUV

The NeuV is a single-person vehicle intended for urban conditions. It is also able to be solely controlled by the on-board AI; the primary intention being able to better understand and interact with human emotions. While this vehicle is still only a concept, it should be on the road within the next few years.

It is now clear to see that we have come a long way in terms of automotive technology. In order to reinforce this point, Verti Insurance has created an infographic of the evolution of the automobile. It will be amazing to see what the future has in store.
